Immigration (Exemption from Work Permits) Notice

Classes of Persons that do not Require a Work Permit or Temporary Work Permit

The Governor in Council, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 28(l)(e) of the Immigration Law (2000 Revision), has prescribed that the classes of persons listed in the Schedule are exempted from the provisions of Part V of the Law, provided that the visits made to the Islands do not exceed the period set out in the Schedule in respect of such persons.

Classes of Persons that do not Require a Work Permit or Temporary Work Permit Visitors to the Islands do not require a work permit or a temporary work permit in order to engage in the following activities provided that only those activities are engaged in and no other activity is carried on that would otherwise require a work permit — (a) attendance at meetings or trade fairs and making purchases from Cayman Islands businesses; (b) attendance at conferences and seminars as an ordinary participant; the receiving of training and techniques and work practices employed in the Islands, providing that the training received is confined to observation, familiarisation and classroom instruction only if employed by a company or organisation carrying on business outside the Cayman Islands; (d) as a representative of an overseas university or school to promote such university or school or to interview applicants for places at such university or school; (e) as a guest speaker at a conference or seminar where such is a single or occasional event and not part of a commercial venture; (f) to run a conference or seminar of up to seven days duration, provided it is a single or occasional event involving a specialist subject and attracting a wide audience and open to participants from outside the Islands; (g) as a sportsman or sportswoman visiting to participate in sports events or for trials or auditions in connection with such events, trials or auditions; (h) as a journalist, whether newspaper, magazine, radio or television from a recognised news organisation visiting the Islands to cover a specific news assignment; (i) to work for short periods on behalf of or for a non-profit making or cultural organisation based in the Islands; (j) to give professional or expert testimony in court proceedings; (k) as a non-executive director of a business being carried on in the Islands when such person is not involved in the day to day operations in the Islands but is visiting in his capacity as a director only. The maximum period of time that may be spent in a visit to the Islands by the exempted persons may not exceed seven days.
